Why The Horticultural World?
THE HORTICULTURAL WORLD (THW) is a business established under company registration 12054//2020 with a two – pronged mandate:
- To support fruits and vegetables out – growers to grow and sell fresh and dried fruits and vegetables in the local and export market
- To support independent farmers in selling fresh and dried fruits and vegetables in the local and export market.
THW’s business model, founded on sustainable development principles, comprises four business units as per the diagram below:
The Horticultural World Business Model


Farm Supplies provides the out – growers with access to strategic inputs under agreed terms and conditions.


The Processing Plant processes produce from both the out - growers and independent farmers who prefer to sell their fruits and vegetables in dried form.










Going farming is THW's anchor business unit whose mandate is to support fruits and vegetables out-growers in growing fruit and vegetables under three schemes, namely:
• Smallholder and Urban Scheme;
• Peri – Urban Scheme
• Farms Scheme


This business Unit’s mandate is to link the farmers to ready markets, both local and export.

- Foreign currency generation for the farmers , the business and the country through the sale of fresh and dried fruits and vegetables to the export market;
- Import bill reduction with some local demand for fruits and vegetables being satisfed through local production and not through imports; and
- Contributing towards the management of climate change through the application of sustainable development principles.

Our Directorate


Johnson Manyakara
Executive Chairman
Johnson Manyakara is a Board Leadership, Human Resources Management and Enterprise Development Guru – Founder & Chairman of Flexible Resourcing Consultancy(Pvt) Limited(FRC), Board Leadership Zimbabwe and The Horticultural World(Pvt) Limited.
Academic and Professional Qualifications:
• Bachelor of Administration(First Class Honours)
• WITS/Havard Senior Executive Development Programme
• Change Management and Executive Development Programme • IPMZ Diploma
He is an academic excellence winning business leader and entrepreneur with over twenty – five (25) years in HR Management, fifteen (15) of which at a strategic level, covering Mining, Agro industries, Manufacturing and Fast Moving Consumer Goods. Having run Mandel Training Centre, the leading Private Sector Management and Leadership Development Institute for over seven (7) years as its CEO, he founded Flexible Resourcing Consultancy – an entity that offers flexible resourcing solutions to both new and established businesses, solutions at the forefront of “best practice” in the field. He has since founded Board Leadership Zimbabwe, an FRC business portfolio positioned to provide Board and Director capacity building in Southern Africa. Johnson also founded The Horticultural World(Pvt) Limited.
He chairs the Private Sector HIV and Wellness Board (ZIPSHAW) and the Zimbabwe Business Council on Wellness (ZBCW). He is the Founder of the Little Falls Foundation Trust (a Trust seeking to contribute towards sustainable development/climate change efforts in Zimbabwe).
Johnson served his three terms as board member of the Cimas Main Board, chairing the Cimas Healthcare Services Board, the Cimas Health Education Fund and the Cimas Pension Fund. He was also a member of the Cimas Marketing & Communication Committee. He is a Past President of the Employers Confederation of Zimbabwe(EMCOZ).


Lucas Rungano
Executive Director (Ex-Officio)
Lucas Rungano has over twenty–seven (27) years hands-on manufacturing experience at Senior Executive level in a fast-paced well developed Zimbabwe Stock Exchange – listed blue chip food and beverages manufacturing company, the last thirteen (13) years as General Manager of one of the company’s Divisions and, on early retirement, as a Consultant to the Division.
Academic and Professional Qualifications:
- Master of Business Administration;
- Bsc(Chemistry & Biochemistry);
- Diploma in Brewing and Distilling; and
- Diploma in Business Intelligence.
SKILLS HONED OVERTIME
- General and strategic management skills with the ability to structure turnaround strategies.
- Ability to develop a focused, coherent and results-driven management team and general workforce
- Competent in scouting and developing new export markets.
- Ability to negotiate and manage export contracts.
- Building strong business relationships with cross-cultural clients/customers and suppliers within diverse environments, at all levels.

- Highest ever export sales into DRC, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Swaziland and Zambia.

- Spearheaded the expansion of the Division from 11000 metric tonnes output per annum to 43 500 metric tonnes.
- Achieved NOSSA 4 star safety rating for the Division.
- Championed the Division’s certification for Environmental Management, Health and Safety (ISO 14001), Quality Management (ISO 9002), Food safety.
- Confederation of Zimbabwean Industries past vice-president for Midlands.
- Past Advisory Board member for Kwekwe Poly-technical College.
- Past Chairman of national academic awards-winning Goldridge College.
- Past Board Member for Goldridge Schools.
- Past Chairman for Kwekwe Golf club.
- Past Treasurer for St. Edward’s Roman Catholic Church parish, Kwekwe.
- Self-managed and funded charity which has produced one ICT graduate with a BSc. in Computer Science and one Bachelor of Technology in Electronic Engineering graduate.


Rufaro Alfred Gunundu
Non-Executive Director
Rufaro Alfred Gunundu has over three decades of Horticultural/Agricultural Production and Agribusiness management experience of which eighteen (18) years were at an Executive and Strategic level. His career spans across Government, Corporate, Private Organisations and Entrepreneural Partnerships.
Currently, Rufaro sits on the Agricultural Research Trust Board and the Gwebi Agricultural College Board. His past directorships, inter alia, include the Horticultural Development Council, Interfresh Limited, Flora Marketing, Hoyo Hoyo Agribusiness(Mozambique), Mazoe Citrus Estates, and the prestigious Zimbabwe Nuffield Farming Scholarship Association.
Rufaro successfully carried out business farm feasibility projects in Zimbabwe and in the Region. He holds a UZ BSc Agriculture Crop Science (Hons) degree, a Management Development Programme (UNISA) and a Diploma in Agriculture.


Reginald Tafadzwa Manyakara
Non - Executive Director
A holder of a Bachelor of Laws(LLB) degree, REGINALD TAFADZWA MANYAKARA, is the Founder and Managing Director of Construction and Mining Specialist Consultants(CMSC), a business specialising in providing civil engineering services to the Construction and Mining industries in South Africa and Zimbabwe. He has ten(10) years post – articles experience as a legal adviser in both the corporate and government spheres with emphasis on construction and engineering law.
Reginald has spent time managing his own Engineering Consultancy and, in the process, gained experience in the Plant and Equipment Hire environment for both the Mining and Construction Sectors in South Africa. He is also a Non – Executive Director of The Veg Enterprise, a family business that grows and sells vegetables in Zimbabwe.
Reginald is very passionate about motorsports in general but motorbikes in particular. He is a member of a motorcycles club and rides his motorcycle when time permits.


Dr. Dennis
Maravanyika
Non - Executive Director
Dr Maravanyika graduated with a BA [Honours] in Business Economics [Marketing Major} from the University of Paisley in Scotland [UK] in 1983, an MBA from the University of Durham [1997], and a PhD from Nottingham Trent University [2007].
In terms of work experience, Dr Maravanyika, who is also a Chartered Marketer [UK], has spent more than twenty – six(26) years at Board level in large local and multinational companies after having been Marketing Director at Dunlop Zimbabwe; General Manager-Marketing at Air Zimbabwe; Marketing Director at PSI Zimbabwe; Chief Executive Officer at Solarcom [Apex Corporation]; Marketing Director at Blue Ribbon Foods [TA Holdings]; and Marketing Director at Castrol Zimbabwe.
Dr Maravanyika has also been giving back to the community by lecturing MBA Marketing Management at the University of Zimbabwe since 2008, teaching Advanced Marketing Strategy [Doctor of Business Leadership] at the Midlands State University and heading the Graduate School of Business at Bindura University of Science Education from 2016 to 2020.
Dr Maravanyika has been involved in training and consultancy and his clients include Old Mutual, BDO Chartered Accountants, National Foods, Zimtrade, Lafarge Zimbabwe, Mandel Training Centre, Price Waterhouse and Marketers Association of Zimbabwe.


Patrick Maseva – Shayawabaya
Non - Executive Director
Patrick Maseva – Shayawabaya has over twenty – eight (28) years of executive Financial Management experience in Mining, Agro-Industrial and Construction concerns in Zimbabwe and the SADC region. Over the years, Patrick has, among others, served as Financial Director/Chief Finance Officer of a ZSE listed sugar producer, an ASX listed platinum miner in Zimbabwe, an AIM listed Tanzanian gold miner, an unlisted South African group with interests in plant hire, civils construction, agriculture and exploration drilling.
At one of the major mining concerns in Zimbabwe, Patrick was a member of the following Committees:
- Executive Committee(member);
- ICT Steering Committee(Chairman);
- Expansion Project Steering Committee(member);
- Procurement Committee(Chairman); and
- Job Grading Committee(Chairman)
Patrick is currently employed by Great Dyke Investments (Private) Limited, which is developing the Darwendale PGM Project, as Deputy CFO. He holds a Bachelor of Accountancy(Honours) Degree, University of Zimbabwe(1986) and was admitted to membership of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Zimbabwe in 1990.
